Even the condemnation of friends and renunciation of family made little or no difference. I’ll admit now that I did things to get the money that I am deeply ashamed of and don’t even want to try to recall them but I am equally sure that there are other things that I did that I don’t even remember”.Īlbert desperately wanted to stop, but couldn’t. “You just got up in the morning knowing that you had to get the money and you didn’t care what you did to get that money. On average it was taking £100 a day to feed his habit. “It was the old adage of one is too many and one thousand is not enough” he recalled. It was a 24 hours a day, seven days a week job just to find the find the money to feed his habit. “If anything I found myself in an even worse cycle of addiction for I was using and experimenting with drugs that were not available in Ireland” he recalled. In an attempt to break the cycle Albert went to London but found himself entering the lion’s den. By then I was deeply enmeshed in the drug culture and was injecting heroin”. “But realising I had a problem and doing something about it was altogether different for I convinced myself that I could kick the habit at any time. It wasn’t until he was seriously injured in a stabbing incident at the age of 19 that he realised that his life revolved round drugs. He failed to recognise or admit that he was rapidly becoming a drug addict and would use or abuse any substance. “I found that drink made me very aggressive while with hash it just gave me the buzz without the hassle of getting involved in fights” he said. But soon became more addicted to the drug rather than the alcohol. On this he warns “there is a frightening prospect facing this area and the entire country over the next three to five years because of the growing use of cocaine for it is the of such potency because of the quality in circulation that it is highly addictive and will have horrendous consequences for users and their families”.Īlbert admitted that he himself followed the traditional route into drug abuse, alcohol followed by experimentation with marijuana. He has been clean for many years now and works with groups, such as the Gardai, in talking to diverse groups from teenagers to parents on his own experience and the local drugs scene.
